Summer Basement Flooding

8/3/2021 (Permalink)

A photo showing heavy mud surrounding a sump pump in a basement Heavy mud and heavy rain in Lancaster, NY caused a sump pump to overwork resulting in damage requiring replacement.

During this summer we have already experienced some heavy rains causing flooding to basements and homes. Here are some helpful tips to get you through any issues you may have. First make sure if flooding occurs you check all possible causes and have the source fixed. For example, check to make sure your sump pump is working and is operational. Sump pump failures can cause plenty of damage if not watched during heavy rains. You most likely will need a plumber to replace the sump pump after flooding. Make sure all drains are clear of debris and dirt, including floor drains, sinks and showers. If your drains back up it can cause a sewage mess in your basement which can be a major cleanup requiring specialized cleaning and deodorizing. You always want to make sure any storage items you have in the basement are at least 6 feet from any drains or off the ground. If you are experiencing any flooding this season, please give us here at SERVPRO of East Erie County. We can make it "Like it never even happened."

Prevent Hidden Water Damage From Appliances | SERVPRO® of East Erie County

3/23/2021 (Permalink)

A photo showing a lady sitting by her washing machine that malfunctioned Call SERVPRO of East Erie County if any of your appliances malfunction. We can help.

External factors, such as storms and floods, can often cause water damage to homes. However, factors inside the home can lead to issues as well, with a common culprit of this being appliances.

Appliance water damage is typically surprising, as appliances may not show any outward issues and are not frequently moved. That is why we encourage homeowners to be aware of the appliances that typically cause damage and how frequently to inspect them.

Common Appliances That Cause Water Damage

Hot Water Heater
Hot water heaters have a shorter lifespan than most people realize, requiring a replacement every 10 to 15 years. On top of that, leaks can often start long before their lifespan is up, making them quite difficult to predict. In addition to replacing your hot water heater on time, check it regularly for leaks and other issues to prevent damages.

Refrigerator
A refrigerator’s ice maker will utilize quite a bit of water in its lifetime, but the flexible plastic piping that is typically installed with the fridge is not always built to last. As microscopic tears develop, water can begin to pool under the fridge, causing structural damage before individuals are aware. Make a point of doing a regular inspection behind the fridge just in case.

Dishwasher
It is rare that dishwashers are moved if they are not being replaced, but homeowners should make sure they make it a habit to inspect behind theirs regularly. Insurance often denies coverage for water damage caused by old dishwashers, so it is wise to check them often and to replace at the first sign of wear.

Washing Machine
The water usage of a washing machine is high, and the hoses that run to them are known to leak regularly. Due to this, it is recommended to check these hoses as often as every month, with a replacement being due every five years regardless of if they appear damaged.

Air Conditioner
Condensation from an air conditioning unit is perfectly normal, and it is typically drained away without issue. However, if there is an issue with a water line or a drainpipe, big problems can surface. Having your unit’s maintenance done on schedule and checking often for any leaks or abnormal water seepage is wise to prevent this from becoming a much larger issue.

If your home has been impacted by water damage or you’d like to put a plan in place in case it happens to you, contact SERVPRO of East Erie County to learn how we can help.

SERVPRO of East Erie County Responds to Several Sump Pump Failures a Year

3/22/2021 (Permalink)

A photo of a sump pump A sump pump can flood a basement with water quickly, leaving several inches of water in your basement.

A sump pump can fail at any time and any during any season. A storm could knock out your power. If your sump pump runs on electricity, you will be in trouble if you lose power during a major storm.  It is always a good idea to have a backup in place. Sump pumps often overwork during a heavy rain. When you have excessive amounts of rain or snow melt, there is a chance your sump pump might continuously run until it burns out. Once it burns out, your basement will flood. Many times, debris could clog the sump pump. The drain lines that feed into the pit of your sump pump often carry bits of dirt, sand and pebbles that can build up over time and clog the pump. The sump pump will turn on, but it will not function properly and could lead to flooding. It is always advisable to replace your sump pump every 6-12 years.  Always listen for odd noises for possible malfunction.

SERVPRO of East Erie County is available 24/7/365 should your sump pump stop working and floods your basement.

Street Flooding Causes Sewer Back in Multiple Homes in West Seneca

3/20/2021 (Permalink)

A photo showing a floor drain with sewer back up. A basement in West Seneca that suffered from a sewage back up. SERVPRO of East Erie County provided cleanup services.

Heavy rain is no stranger to Western NY especially in the summer months.  A cold front meets a warm front creating precipitation and storms. We can get 2-4 inches of rain in an hour resulting in flooded streets, overflowing creeks, soaked lawns and unfortunately, flooded basements or roof leaks.
Living in a flood zone or near a creek is plenty to worry about. During a torrential downpour, the rain can overwhelm the storm sewage treatment plants and pump stations.  Because of the amount of rain, the pumps cannot always keep up no matter how great the system is.  When the water has no other place to go, our backs up into our basements causing either storm water backup or feces from the sewer lines.  Some older cities have both the storm and septic lines combined into one system.  Either source contains high levels of bacteria and classified as gray or black water.  Precautions should be taken when dealing with face contaminated water.  The experts at SERVPRO of East Erie County can help with the cleanup.

SERVPRO Tips to Prevent Space Heater Fires

Space heaters, electrical fires, fireplaces, and kerosene heaters are some of the causes of fires SERVPRO of Amherst/Clarence has provided emergency mitigation services and cleaning. There are more fires during the cold months over any other season. Space heaters are behind 79 percent of deadly home heating fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Most of those fires start because an object sitting to closet to the heater got too hot and caught fire, but even plugging the equipment into the wrong outlet could put you in danger.

  • Make sure the space heater has the seal of a nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories).
  • Make sure the heater is equipped with a tip-over safety switch, which automatically shuts off the heater if the unit gets falls over.
  • Select a heater properly sized for the room.
  • Install smoke alarms for every floor of your home, outside all sleeping areas and inside each bedroom. Test them once a month and change batteries every 6 months or sooner.
  • Have carbon monoxide detectors set up on every level. High levels of carbon monoxide can cause headaches, sickness, and death.

With over 48 years of experience SERVPRO of Amherst/Clarence operated and owned by Jennifer Sullivan-McLear, Bill and Pat Sullivan are the company you can trust for your cleaning needs.

Insulation Damage

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

A photo showing damaged insulation Fire and water can cause significant damage.

During a house fire, there are so many worries and troubles that a homeowner will face. Knowing how troublesome home emergencies are was the inspiration for SERVPRO of East Erie County to become a thing. SERVPRO of East Erie County works with homeowners, business owners and insurance companies to make fire damages “Like it never even happened.”  But how do we take care of the aftermath of fire damages, like smoke damages?

Smoke damages are one branch of the different types of fire damages, but it is important to understand the behavior of smoke. Smoke rises to the upper levels of structures, so during the fire damage mitigation process, SERVPRO of East Erie County will examine upper levels of a structure to inspect the insulation for odor and damage. Insulation can trap smoke and allow the smell to linger, long past the fire. SERVPRO of East Erie County team remove the odorous insulation and then use special cleaning solutions and techniques to remove the smell from a home.

Ice Dam

3/14/2021 (Permalink)

A photo showing ice on a roof SERVPRO of East Erie County can help with you with ice dam leak damage. Don’t wait for mold to grow.

Ice damming is a common occurrence in Lancaster, NY during the winter months. An ice dam is the buildup of ice on the slopes and eaves of a roof from snow melting. As the temperature changes, the snow melts and the ice forms and builds up. The ice prevents water from properly draining off the roof. The water will be forced to leak into the home causing water damage to ceilings, walls, insulation, and flooring. Moisture can lead to mildew and mold. It is essential to act! The first step is to remove the source of the problem. There are contractors that will help with the removal of ice by applying hot water to the gutter areas and apply a snow melt such as calcium chloride. There are many risks when performing outside work in the winter, so hire a professional and avoid injury or damage to your roof. It may take a couple days for the ice to melt. SERVPRO of East Erie County can still assist by opening the wall cavity and can remove the wet insulation and apply an antimicrobial. Once the ice is completely melted, SERVPRO will return to set up professional drying equipment to ensure a quick dry out of the wet areas. Do not perform any repairs until it is completely dry. If you need assistance, please call SERVPRO of East Erie County at 716-656-7131 Serving Western NY since 1972. Family operated and trusted by all.

Outdoor Cooking Safety

3/12/2021 (Permalink)

The photo shows a man cooking non a grill with the SERVPRO logo below it. Happy grilling and enjoy the spring weather!

Spring days are upon us, and its getting close to grilling season. Make sure you are following safety guidelines when firing up your grill so you can prevent a fire elsewhere. SERVPRO of East Erie County wants you to have a safe summer!

Nearly 9,000 home fires a year involve grills, according to a National Fire Protection Association report.

Follow these tips:

  • Check the gas hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year.  Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose, which will show escaping gas by releasing bubbles.
  • If you smell or suspect a gas leak, and there is no flame, turn off the gas tank and grill. Get a professional to service it before using it again.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, get away from the grill immediately and call the fire department. Do not attempt to move the grill.
  • Never turn on the gas when the lid is closed. The gas may build up inside, and when ignited, the lid could blow off and cause injuries or burns.
  • After cooking, make sure you completely close the valve on the propane tank.
  • Always store gas grills – and propane tanks – outside and away from your house.
  • The leading cause of structure fires from use of charcoal grills was leaving or placing an object that could burn too close to the grill, according to the NFPA study.
  • Charcoal grills can continue to remain hot for many hours after the flames extinguish. Avoid placing any burnable objects near the grill or moving the grill while the coals are hot. Keep combustible items that may be blown by the wind away from the grill.
  • Check for rust damage in metal grills, which may make it possible for charcoal to fall through onto surfaces below and cause a fire.
  • Purchase the proper starter fluid. Store out of reach from children and away from heat sources.
  • Do not add charcoal starter fluid when coals or kindling have already been ignited. Never use any other flammable or combustible liquid to get the fire started.
  • If the fire is too low, rekindle with dry kindling and more charcoal if needed. Avoid adding liquid fuel because it can cause a flash fire.
  • Do not leave the grill unattended.

Should you have a mishap, SERVPRO of East Erie is ready to help.

Familiarizing Yourself With the 3 Classifications of Floodwaters | SERVPRO® of East Erie County

3/4/2021 (Permalink)

Shows a man ringing out a wet towel in a pail. Water is covering the floor because the washing machine overflowed. Classes of water damage.

Not all water is created equal when it comes to water damage as there are three classifications for it: clean, gray and black. By gaining a better understanding of the different types of water, you will understand how to better handle a water damage situation.

You will always have a cleanup and restoration process to go through no matter what type of water has caused damage. However, before cleanup can begin, the most important aspect is removing all of the moisture and damp items quickly, so as not to enable mold to flourish in an ideal environment.

The Least Dangerous: Clean Water

Obviously, much like its name states, this water is considered “clean” and should not be the type to pose an immediate threat to your health. This water is free of contaminants and can come from:

  • Broken water lines
  • Malfunctioning appliances
  • Toilet holding tanks
  • Snow melt and rainwater

This type of water damage is the easiest type of water damage to deal with, as there will be fewer microbes living in the water, but it can become gray water after 48 hours and after contact with the surfaces of a building, moving it up to category two.

Middle of the Road Danger: Gray Water

Gray water is where water damage cleanup and restoration can become a bit more tricky. It may be water that could pose a health risk, due to it containing chemical or biological contamination. The slight contamination involved with gray water means that it would need to be thoroughly treated before being safe to consume.

Gray water is water that comes from dishwashers, aquariums, showers, etc. and, as always, the 48-hour exposure time applies here as well, with gray water turning into black water if not treated.

The Most Dangerous: Black Water

Black water is the most dangerous of the three classifications and is considered to be highly contaminated with harmful chemicals and biological matter. This would include floodwaters containing soil and all sewage waters.

Sewage is contaminated with microbes, including bacteria, protozoans, molds, fungi and more—many of which are harmful to humans and create a health hazard.

Diseases that can be transmitted by black water are:

  • Cholera
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis
  • Gastroenteritis-type illnesses

Remember, whenever there is a flood, all waters should be assumed to be black water since it will pick up contaminants along its path.

These three classifications of floodwater are recognized by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Remediation Certification (IICRC), which is an organization that certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industry. Our technicians have all studied IICRC standards, have learned the best practices in water restoration and are available to help determine the steps to take to get your home back to normal.

It doesn’t matter what type of water has caused damage to your home or business, SERVPRO® of East Erie County is here to help get the situation under control and make it "Like it never even happened." Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you need emergency cleanup and restoration services!

Avoid Burst Pipes in Winter Storms!

2/24/2021 (Permalink)

A pipe covered in ice SERVPRO is here to help in the event of a burst pipe!

The snow keeps piling up here in the Western New York area and it seems like this winter will never end. But while the snowy landscapes may look beautiful, the extreme cold brings danger of pipes bursting. What causes a pipe to burst? When a pipe experiences too much pressure, it will break open causing major flooding and damage. Frozen pipes are one of the factors that can cause pipes to burst. When water freezes inside a pipe, it expands and increases the pressure within the pipe. To prevent water pipes from bursting in the extreme cold, turn your faucet on to a slow steady stream of water. This keeps water moving throughout the pipes and prevents the buildup of pressure. Also consider insulating your pipes and never letting your home go below 55 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter time. You can also open up cabinet doors around kitchen pipes to allow warm arm to circulate. These tips should help you avoid a catastrophic pipe burst from the stormy winter conditions. If a pipe burst does occur, make your first call to SERVPRO and we’ll respond right away to help mitigate damage and help clean up any mess.

What to do if your basement floods

6/30/2020 (Permalink)

Rain falling into a puddle Rain falling into a puddle in the street, heavy rains can cause plenty of issues in a basement.

With all this rain and wind lately it's more than possible for you to experience flooding due to the weather. Here are some helpful tips to get you through any issues you may have. Reasons for House Fire Increases in Winter | SERVPRO® of East Erie

12/10/2019 (Permalink)

Snow covered tree branches Practicing prevention is the best way to reduce the chance of a fire, however if you do experience a loss contact SERVPRO of East Erie County.

While cold temperatures and early sunsets are the trademarks of winter, it is not all about coziness—winter also leads to more house fires than any other season.

While a house fire could occur to anyone at any time, being aware of the things that are riskier in the winter will give you an extra boost to your fire preparedness. We have compiled both some common house fire causes and prevention tips for you to keep in mind during the cooler weather.

Top Causes of Winter House Fires

An Increase in Cooking

Regardless of the time of year, cooking is the No. 1 cause of house fires in the United States. That being said, winter typically leads to an increase in baking, entertaining and large holiday meals, making cooking fires even more common this time of year.

The Risk of Heaters

While staying warm is important, practicing safe heating habits is, too. Heating is the second leading cause of winter firesbecause of how many unsafe heating practices are implored. Small, moveable heaters do not always turn off when tipped over, causing fires to break out. Additionally, practicing fireplace safety by using screens and moving flammable objects away from any flame can cut down on the number of fires that occur due to sparks.

Candles and Decorations

Candles and decorations tend to be used more commonly in the wintertime, both to take advantage of cozy winter scents and to celebrate the holidays. Unfortunately, any time there is an open flame, there is an increased fire risk. Couple this with the fact that many winter decorations use flammable materials or have electronic components and it can easily lead to a home fire.

Tricks for Preventing Winter Fires

Practicing vigilant fire prevention is the best way to ensure you never have to utilize your knowledge during an active fire situation. These helpful tips can be used both in winter and at any time of year to help you reduce your risks:

  • Check smoke alarms once every 30 days and replace every 10 years.
  • Always monitor open flames.
  • Select space heaters with automatic shut-offs in case they tip over.
  • Utilize a screen every time you use a fireplace.
  • Draft and practice an emergency escape plan with your household.

If your home has been impacted by a fire, call us right away. We are leaders in restoration and can help you recover quickly after a fire occurs.

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

How Does Ozone Help With Fire and Smoke Odors

10/14/2018 (Permalink)

Ozone Generator used in Depew, Cheektowaga, Lancaster and surrounding cities for fast odor removal.

The use of ozone can be a very effective way of removing odor from a property. SERVPRO may commonly use this method following fire damage cleaning, skunk odor to the property, mold or full property cleaning. SERVPRO will provide a free estimate of your situation and decide if Ozone will be the best and most appropriate method of odor removal.

When it comes to successful deodorization the first step is to clean/remove or fix what is causing the odor, for example the best chance of success would be to clean the fire damage first, fix a leaking pipe that is causing a musty odor, or remove the garbage from an area before starting the ozone process. It will be crucial to remove items emitting odor.

How it works: Basically, ozone removes odor by destroying the molecules, bacteria, and spores that cause unpleasant smells.  Ozone (O3) is a highly reactive molecule and is very quick to chemically react with particles that it comes into contact with in the air and on surfaces.  The extra oxygen atom in the ozone attaches itself to other molecules, chemically changing their structure to create non-offensive molecules – eliminating the smell. *Ozonesolutions.com

For more questions regarding our deodorization methods please feel free to call our office and we would be happy to help!

SERVPRO of East Erie County Can Help After Your Fire

10/14/2018 (Permalink)

Let SERVPRO of East Erie County help with your cleaning needs after a fire in your Depew, Lancaster, Cheektowaga, West Seneca home

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of East Erie County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Mold Remediation Help. Does your Cheektowaga home have mold?

10/14/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can be anywhere in your home and you might not be able to see it. This was discovered behind the dishwasher.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Commercial Water Damage

A commercial water damage in Cheektowaga, NY

Commercial Water Damage In Buffalo, NY

Commercial water damage surprises Buffalo business owners every time it happens. Everyone knows that the sprinkler system is there to stop fire damage, but no one understands the damage that happens when it engages. Fortunately, SERVPRO has the experience, training, and equipment to restore an office or a kitchen back to their original state.

Sprinklers soak everything, that is what they are supposed to do to prevent the spread of fire. Paper documents, cardboard storage boxes, and books quickly turn to a mush and must be thrown out. If the final condition is not an issue and the business owner needs to keep original contracts, we can preserve the legibility of our technicians can get them spread out on a dry surface. We use air movers to blow warm, dry air over the paper gently and while we cannot return the items to their original condition or look, we can preserve the image in many cases.

The item that usually catches the most damage next is the carpet. SERVPRO technicians use extraction wands to draw out water without damaging the nape of the carpet. If there is a carpet pad, we remove and dispose of it. Pads quickly deteriorate when they become wet, and they are cheaper to replace rather than attempt to restore. Once we remove the water, crew members use the air movers again to force warm, dry air across the surface to dry it out while preventing mold.

SERVPRO can make your life easier and get you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

What Does it Take For Mold to Grow?

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

Mold growing on the basement rafters after a leaky sink drain wasn't taken care of.

In the 90’s mold became a news headline across the country. The strain of “Black” Mold, Stachybotrys, struck fear in the hearts of thousands of Americans.  Even though that hysteria has passed, it is no joking matter to have mold growing in your home.  It is true that mold spores are everywhere, but for mold to grow you have to have two things: 1) food; 2) dark moist conditions.  There is very little you can do to remove all “food” sources in a house, but you can eliminate the water factor.  When you have a water loss, it is incredibly important to completely dry the area affected so mold will not grow. If you try to take care of it yourself, you run the risk of giving mold a chance to infiltrate your house.  Why would you do that when you can call SERVPRO® of East Erie County at 716-656-7131 and make sure your house is dry.

Storm Damage: What Causes It?

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Can Cause A lot of Problems

New York has had its fair share of damaging storms, and Cheektowaga is no exception. Knowing what type of storm is coming is the best way to be prepared. Did you know there are 10 different storm types? This far north, most people think about winter storms when they think about storms. But in the summer months, it’s important to be prepared for effects of tropical storms, too.

SERVPRO® of East Erie County recognizes the importance of keeping homes or businesses safe before and after a storm.

10 common storms are:
  • Hurricanes
  • Tornadoes
  • Flooding
  • Snow storm
  • Hail storm
  • Thunderstorm
  • Lightning storm
  • Tropical storms
  • Ice storms
  • Derecho storms

Not every geographic location in the United States will experience the same type of storms. You might not even know what that last one is (a Derecho storm is one giant storm made of several large storms). More commonly, Buffalo is likely to experience the effects of a tropical storm, even hundreds of miles from the Atlantic Coast.

Storm damage from hail or lightning are familiar, but not everyone is informed about the specific damage a hurricane can cause.

Because hurricanes have far reaching effects (Hurricane Sandy affected 24 states), it’s very important to be informed on the damage they cause. This blog in particular will focus on hurricane - whether you experience a hurricane’s immediate damage or the aftermath.

Common Storm Damage from Hurricanes1. Storm Surge

Storm surge directly affects the coast but can cause widespread damage. Storm surge occurs when wind drives water to the shore to the point that water piles up past the predicted tide level. The power of this water is so forceful that it can destroy structures and buildings.

2. Flooding

Floods from a hurricane are often caused directly by storm surge. The extra water from storm surge is pushed far inland since it has nowhere else to go. The heavy rainfall that accompanies a hurricane also contributes heavily to flooding. Hurricanes can cause rainfall as far as 100 miles from its landing point, causing widespread flooding. A tropical storm doesn’t even have to reach hurricane classification to cause heavy rain and floods.

3. Wind

Wind from hurricanes can reach speeds as fast as 74 - 155 miles per hour. These powerful winds can uproot trees, down power lines, and fling debris. This debris can cause even more damage as it flies around. Winds during a storm can also be so powerful as to lift the roof on a house. Tornadoes can even form within hurricanes.

Damage caused by these hurricane effects can be far-reaching and unexpected. Thus, it is vital to take cautions like stocking an emergency preparedness kit, adding storm-resistant features to your home, and heeding any official warnings ahead of a storm.

Cleanup and restoration after a storm can be overwhelming. Call SERVPRO® of East Erie County, the leading expert in storm damage restoration.

Bathroom Mold?

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO if ready!

One of the first signs that you may have mold damage in your home is continually detecting a musty odor. Catching the odor anywhere in your home is never a good thing, but it is particularly unfortunate when you come across it in your bathroom. It usually indicates that there is a leak in your plumbing and it has caused a mold colony to grow. It is vital to deal with the mold in your washroom as quickly as possible because it can cause health effects. Fortunately, there is qualified help close to your home that you can rely on.

Many people misunderstand the nature of mold spores and how they come to cause mold in your Buffalo home. The truth is that mold spores are not dangerous and they are everywhere. You can never truly be completely rid of them. However, if they come into contact with moisture, they can rapidly grow and multiply. As they grow, they end up creating a mold colony that can damage the structure of your home.

SERVPRO of East Erie County understands that the longer that mold is in your home, the more damage it can do to the structure of it. We strive to arrive at your residence after your phone call as quickly as possible. Once our technicians get there, we can begin the remediation right away.

The first thing that SERVPRO can do is section off the entrance to your bathroom and any vents inside of it. Creating a quarantine allows us to agitate the mold without giving it the freedom to spread to other parts of your home. As we investigate and find that the mold is building behind your sink, we can begin to disinfect the area and clean the mold from the surface of your walls.

While we work, our SERVPRO techs can set up an air scrubber with a HEPA filter. Not only does it neutralize the smell that mold creates, but it can also capture airborne mold spores. Once the mold has been cleaned away from your walls, we can use an antifungal spray to ensure regrowth is less likely. Finally, our technicians can make sure to remove any excess moisture from the area.

If you come across a musty smell in your home, do not delay. Call 716-656-7131 and contact SERVPRO of East Erie County. We're open 24/7 and always ready to take your call.

Are You Prepared for Flooding in Cheektowaga ?

9/6/2018 (Permalink)

Are You Prepared for Flooding in Cheektowaga ?

The likelihood of flooding, even if you live in an area where excess water is unusual, has increased thanks to climate change. If there is a chance for rain, floods are possible.

A flood is defined as when two or more acres or properties are completely or partially submerged by water.

But if flooding happens, the legal definition might be the least of your worries. Instead, you will be worried about cleanup and restoration. Continue reading this blog for helpful information on how to prepare for a flood: no ark necessary.

###1. Electricity In the case of an emergency, you always need to have a generator on hand. It is impossible to know if power lines will still be working after a flood or if the usual electric resources will be available and working. Plenty of variables will determine the type of generator you need.

Don’t forget that water conducts electricity, and a flood means lots of excess water. When flooding is imminent, appliances should immediately be moved to higher ground.

###2. Risk Become familiar with the risk of flooding in your area, using FEMA or your local government’s website. You will be more prepared if you know when floods are likely and what causes them. For the Cheektowaga, Depew and West Seneca area, start here.

It’s also smart to purchase a weather radio and become adept at using it so that you will be forewarned of severe weather events that are on the way.

###3. Emergency Prep Is your emergency kit properly prepped for a flood? Your prep kit should include extra water since flooding can contaminate water sources, important documents sealed in waterproof storage, plus extra food supplies. For more information on how to pack an emergency kit, read this guide.

###4. Evacuation Planning for evacuation includes two steps. Start by researching your local government’s official evacuation plan. Then, create a personal evacuation plan with your family that includes emergency communication modes. Practice the evacuation route until everyone is familiar and comfortable with it.

Once the floor waters recede, you’ll want to have a plan in place for clean up. SERVPRO® of East Erie County is ready to help and make it like it never even happened.

Preventative maintenance actions include:

- Regular vacuuming

- Spot removal

- Pilating the carpet to prevent matting

- Moving furniture to change traffic patterns

- Using walk-off matts to limit the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet

A good rule of thumb would be to professionally clean your carpets every 12 months.

Ice Dam

Have Water or Flood Damage? Call Us Today – (716) 656-7131 SERVPRO of East Erie County

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms on a roof and prevents melting snow/ice (water) from draining off the roof. With nowhere else to go, and with freezing at night and melting during the day, the water will eventually back up behind the dam and ultimately leak into the home causing severe damage to roof shingles, ceilings, walls, insulation, and more. If damage from an ice dam goes unnoticed in an attic, there is also a potential for mold/mildew to form.  If you suspect that your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals can inspect and assess your property. If mold is found, they have the training, equipment, and expertise to handle the situation.

Heavy Sewage Back Up In Basement. No match for SERVPRO of East Erie County.

Sewage Back-Up

No one wants sewage in their basement but it happens very often in Western New York from heavy rain storms. It is not rare that during heavy rains the sewer lines fill up with water much faster than they drain due to insufficient system capacity. This fact may lead to a sewage backup as the water flows back through residential floor drains and causes overflows. This type of water is a called Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

24 Hour Emergency Service

  • Water contaminated with sewage backup should be considered an emergency situation and dealt with as quickly as possible. SERVPRO professionals from East Erie County are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are water damage restoration specialists with specialized training, equipment and protective gear to safely restore your home or business.

Fire Safety Tips from SERVPRO of East Erie County

Fire Safety Tips from SERVPRO of East Erie County

Fire Safety

  • Fire is FAST!
    There is little time!

In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house.  In minutes, a house can be engulfed in flames. Most fires occur in the home when people are asleep. If you wake up to a fire, you won't have time to grab valuables because fire spreads too quickly and the smoke is too thick. There is only time to escape.

  • Fire is HOT!
Heat is more threatening than flames.

A fire's heat alone can kill.  Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level.  Inhaling this super hot air will scorch your lungs. This heat can melt clothes to your skin.  In five minutes a room can get so hot that everything in it ignites at once: this is called flashover.

  • Fire is DARK!
Fire isn't bright, it's pitch black.

Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness. If you wake up to a fire you may be blinded, disoriented and unable to find your way around the home you've lived in for years.

  • Fire is DEADLY!
Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do.

Fire uses up the oxygen you need and produces smoke and poisonous gases that kill. Breathing even small amounts of smoke and toxic gases can make you drowsy, disoriented and short of breath.  The odorless, colorless fumes can lull you into a deep sleep before the flames reach your door.  You may not wake up in time to escape.

Fire Safety Tips
In the event of a fire, remember time is the biggest enemy and every second counts! Escape first, then call for help. Develop a home fire escape plan and designate a meeting place outside. Make sure everyone in the family knows two ways to escape from every room. Practice feeling your way out with your eyes closed. Never stand up in a fire, always crawl low under the smoke and try to keep your mouth covered. Never return to a burning building for any reason; it may cost you your life.

Finally, having a working smoke alarm dramatically increases your chances of surviving a fire.

And remember to practice a home escape plan frequently with your family.

SERVPRO of East Erie County participates in many open houses at the local fire departments in October. Check with your local fire department for their schedule.

Does Your Cheektowaga Home Have A Mold Problem? SERVPRO of East Erie County can help.

9/26/2017 (Permalink)

In Cheektowaga, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.
